Drain Cleaner

I don't know why I didn't already know this.  And maybe somebody told me about this, and it just didn't register.  Or possibly this is old news to you, and as you read this, you'll be giving yourself a mental head-slap and utter out the word "Duh!"

And, I don't know why this surprises me, because I love using both vinegar and baking soda for so many things.  But, through Pinterest I found this website for non-toxic drain cleaner.  We have four clogged drains.  I was just about to go out and get some Drano, when I remembered the pin that I put on one of my boards months ago (okay, maybe years...)  ;)  So, I tried it, thinking it was going to be a fail like all the laundry detergent ones that I have tried and eventually had clogged up my washer.

But I tried it anyway, and it worked!!!!  Most drains were completely unclogged on the first try!!  The toughest clog was somewhat cleared on the first try, but I did it a second time just in case.

What you need:
1/4 c. baking soda
1 c. white distilled vinegar
1 teapot full of boiling water

What you do:
- Put baking soda down the drain  (In my drains, the stopper doesn't come out (at least not easily), so I had to kind of push it down the drain)

- SLOWLY pour the cup of vinegar down the drain.  Crazy bubbling is normal. I used a skewer to push down the drain while it was bubbling, because our drains needed the help. :)

- Then heat up your teapot of water to the boiling point.  Do this last, so the vinegar and baking soda have time to work.

- Once it's whistling, take the teapot to your drain and SLOWLY pour the boiling water down the drain.

That's it!!

When I did it, I heard the water going down the drain within 30 seconds.  For bad clogs, you might want to do it twice.

I'd love to take credit for this.  But as I said, I saw it on Pinterest.  So here's the link where I found it.

Drano = $4-$7 and most of the time you have to use the whole bottle for one drain.

Vinegar & Baking Soda = $2-$4 with multiple uses.  (At the very least 4)  Plus, this one is non-toxic, kid friendly, and pet friendly!
